District Courts are the primary trial courts in Texas.  District Courts are courts of general jurisdiction although the actual jurisdiction of any specific court may be limited.  Generally district courts, among other cases, try the following kinds of cases:  civil matters with a minimum monetary limit but no maximum monetary limit; all criminal cases of the grade of felony and misdemeanors involving official misconduct; cases for divorce; suits for title to land or enforcement of liens on land; contested elections; suits in slander or defamation; and suits on behalf of the State for penalties, forfeitures, escheat.  For more information about the jurisdiction of courts in Texas, see the "Judicial Information" tab at the Office of Court Administration's website (http://www.courts.state.tx.us/oca/).

Tom Green County has four District Courts:  the 51st District Court, 119th District Court, 340th District Court, and the 391st District Court.  The statutes that created each of these courts also authorize a judge from any one of these courts to hear cases filed in any of the four courts.

These four courts share jurisdiction in Tom Green County.  In addition to Tom Green county, two of the District Courts also have jurisdiction in counties that surround Tom Green.  The 51st District Court's jurisdiction includes Schleicher, Irion, Sterling and Coke Counties as well as Tom Green.  The 119th District hears cases in Concho, Runnels and Tom Green Counties.

The Tom Green County District Courts are located in the County Courthouse at 112 W. Beauregard.
