Your child may be held in the Tom Green County Juvenile Detention Facility if they are formally referred by a police agency or violate their Orders of Probation or Conditions of Release.  The following is information regarding the Detention Facility.

The Tom Green County Juvenile Detention Facility is a 25 bed facility.  Each child who is brought in has their own room complete with a bed, sheets, blanket, toilet, and sink.  The Juvenile Detention Facility is a secure facility, which means that all of the doors lock.  Juveniles held in the Detention Facility are monitored visually in compliance with the requirements of the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission.  If your child is referred, everything that they need will be provided for them.  You do not need to bring anything, except medication that is prescribed, unless there is a special request to the facility for your child.

If your child is placed in Detention, a Detention Hearing must be held no later than the second working day after the child is brought in.  The hearing is presided over by an authorized Juvenile Judge (generally a District Court Judge in Tom Green County).  If a your child is ordered detained, your child may be held for 10 working days after the initial detention hearing before another Detention Hearing must be held.  Your child will be provided an attorney for all hearings if you cannot afford to hire one.

Detention Officers are trained to assist your child with problems that they may experience.  If your child has mental or emotional issues that need to be addressed, MHMR for the Concho Valley will be notified to assess your child.

Your child will be provided with the opportunity to eat 3 meals per day plus a snack in the evening.  Your child may refuse to eat, but the opportunity for them to eat will always be provided.  Meal times are: Breakfast (Around 8:00 a.m.), Lunch (Around 12:00 p.m.), Supper (Around 5:00 p.m.), and their snack is provided around 8:00 p.m.

Your child will attend school while they are detained.  San Angelo ISD provides a teacher for the facility during normal school months.  The teacher is Special Education Certified for All Levels and assists the child with their school work that is sent from their home campus.

Visitation is every weekday (Monday - Friday) from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., excluding County Holidays and is for 15 minutes.  In order to visit your child, you must be on the approved visitation list provided by the child's Juvenile Probation Officer, and present a valid picture ID prior to each and every visitation.  Those who check in with the Front Desk prior to 4:45 p.m., and are on the child's visitation list, will be allowed to visit their child.  Special visitation times may be set up at the discretion of the Detention Supervisor or Director of Detention for extremely unique circumstances that hinder a parent from visiting their child.  Special visitation times are not guaranteed and parents should make every effort to visit during normal hours.

Juveniles are allowed to make phone calls 3 days per week.  The days are Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday.  Phone calls made from the facility are collect calls and are only allowed to those who are on the child's visitation list.  Your child's phone call will be automatically disconnected if the phone company detects usage of 3-way calling.  Your child may be allowed to make toll free calls to you at the discretion of the Detention Supervisor or the Director of Detention.  The website for the company that the Detention Center uses for juvenile calling is the 3Oliver Company utilizing Legacy.  You may also contact the 3Oliver Company at the above link, or at 800-750-3646 with further questions or to set up an account.  Setting up your child's account is easily done and can be paid for in a variety of ways, including a bank debit card, credit card, Western Union®, MoneyGram®, PayPal®, Cashier's Check, or Money Order.  The Phone Line is staffed 24 hours a day/7 days a week.
